6,7,and 8 of 20

So between my sore knee, bad shoes and a hectic few weeks at work, you could say the training has been a little rough. On a positive note, even with all the set backs, I can still claim victory in my longest run to date; 6.54 miles. Yay Me!

My new shoes are still a few days out so I will need to spend the majority of this week on a bike. I'm trying not to see this as a set back, but an opportunity to strengthen different muscles. I'm afraid of losing ground, but getting the right shoe is a must. For now I.....peddle on.

New Seasons

The changing of seasons is something magical isn't it? Spring and Fall are my favorites and sadly the shortest lived in the great state of Idaho. I like to joke that they each last about two weeks so you have to make them count.

I, like so many of the bloggers I have been following, seem to be having a change of season in my own life. I wonder if we just naturally fall into rhythm with the world around us? Change is good, change is scary.

What changes are happening in your life? Are you ready to embrace them or are you facing them with dread? I'm so excited for the changes in front of me, but will I be able to adapt? Who knows.

I'm going back to school in the Fall. It's just one class so really not a big deal, but something that I have wanted to do for the last 15 years. My life motto for the last two years has been -
"No Regrets"

I never want to look back at my life and think "Too bad I never...". This is my advise; live your life to the fullest, don't hold back what you believe, love with your whole heart, don't be afraid of the unknown. Live a life with no regrets.

Color of March No.2

This week I'm thankful for:

Sunshine
Weekends off
My Grammy
Antique stores
Spending time with Hubby
Having friends you can be "real" with

I love knitting. I haven't had a chance to talk about it much yet, but its true. There is something so wonderful about using your hands to create something both beautiful and functional. I love the feel of the yarn as it slips between my fingers, sometimes course sometimes soft. I'll be sharing something I have just finished knitting very soon. I hope you have a lovely and relaxing weekend, I know I will.

Art History

My son is a genius. Now I know what your thinking and I'm sure most moms have similar opinions in regards to their own children, but this is truly a legitimate proclamation. You''ll soon see what I'm talking about.

One of our favorite "mother & son" activities is art. I absolutely love that my son shares my artistic passions. Lately he has been struggling to find direction in his art, but last week as we were brainstorming, he had his genius idea. He said "Mom, I think it would be cool to do an art project for every era in history." Now tell me that isn't a splendid idea! What a great way to learn, hands on, about art history. We will choose an era, research types of art from that time period and recreate it. See, I told you it was brilliant.

I asked what era we should start with and naturally he said, "I think we should start at the beginning." I have to say I wasn't tremendously excited about Prehistoric Art, but what an adventure it turned out to be. I told my husband about our new project and much to my surprise he had the perfect research field trip idea. Apparently we are lucky enough to have a large collection of 12,000 year old petroglyphs about an hour South of our home. Perfect!

Last weekend we headed out on our first research expedition. The weather was an ideal 65 and sunny. According to a website we found on the area, a 3 mile hike along the Snake River would bring us to a collection of boulders adorned with ancient petroglyphs.

After 5 and a half miles of hiking (hmmm) we finally found the boulders in question. At first I didn't see the petroglyphs. I was looking closely at a large boulder, not seeing anything, when my husband said "You have to step back." All of a sudden they just appeared. Being able to see and touch something so ancient was surreal. What did they mean? What were the people like that made them? Was this home to a tribe or some sacred location?  It was fun to surmise the possibilities. No matter what the reasons, just like me, they were driven to create.

After taking many reference photos, we each picked a rock that would be suitable for petroglyph replication (and easy transport). As often happens during extended bouts of physical activity, our hike back was filled with talk of what we should eat for dinner. My son's second genius idea was about to be born. "Why don't we add food to our research of each time period?" he says. Now we're talking. What better food to accompany Prehistoric Art than bison. Being absolutely famished after an 11+ mile hike we all agreed that bison jerky would take to long, but luckily we have a great local burger joint with bison burgers on the menu. A great end to a great day.

It turns out we will shortly be heading on a second petroglyph expedition. Apparently the hike really is 3 miles if you start from the right spot. Oops! We only saw a small fraction of what's really out there. Another adventure awaits. I guess it will give me some time to make that jerky.

Lessons

In a recent blog I eluded to something that was going to drastically change my blogging life. Well here is the big news....I just got my very own computer! Up until now I have done a majority of my post via my phone and occasionally kicked my husband of his computer.

Time for some real talk, are you ready? I have actually had my computer for a week now. Have you noticed an increase in posts....nope. It would seem that the computer didn't have as big of an impact in my blogging as I thought. Now don't get me wrong, my computer is amazing. I know that it will have a huge impact in many areas of my life, but oddly enough it doesn't create more hours in my day. That fact was a little bit of a let down, not gonna lie.

So the lesson of the day-
Its more about how we use the tools we have then it is about the tools themselves.

I'm sitting in Starbucks on my lunch, blogging and feeling like a real computer nerd. Love it! Maybe this girl can be taught after all.

5 of 20

Week five was a tough one. Last Monday's run was cut short by pain in my knee. I was filled with fear that I may have to stop training or risk a serious injury. After the mental commitment (not to mention the time commitment) of this 20 weeks of training, the thought that I might have to stop was really aggravating. I took a few days off from running and decided that I needed to put a little more focus on strength training.

I'm happy to report that so for this week, things are looking up. What surprised me the most from my little brake was the negative effects I noticed from my lack of running. All last week I felt lethargic and unmotivated. I had some extra time in the evenings, but didn't feel inspired to taking advantage of it. I can't tell you how many times over the last month that I have thought of all the things I would be accomplishing at home if I wasn't running, but now I'm wondering if that's true. I do have less time, but I feel I'm better equipped to make the most of it when I'm exercising. I'm sure I will need to remind my self of these epiphanies over the next few month, but for now I run on.

Weekly Totals-
  • Total Miles- 6.21
  • Average Pace- 13.12
  • Total Run Time- 1h, 22m

The Color of March

Im so excited for The Color of Life this month! I love green, I love all things Irish and two of my dearest friends have birthdays this month (one on St. Patricks day).

Colors for March

This weekend has been packed full. I look forward to sharing some of the awesome things we did, but it will have to wait just a little longer. I have something in the works that will hopefully revolution my blogging life. Cant wait...you have no idea. Until then I thought I would leave you with some fun photos.

Happy March!
